Psychiatrist, Dr. M. Scott Peck, said, “We live in a profoundly mysterious universe.” Wise people know the truth of this statement. Foolish people think they know a great deal. They do not.
Ask any knowledgeable scientist to define gravity, and he will say, “It is the attraction between any two masses in the universe.” If you ask a physicist how gravity is measured, he will declare, “It is the product of the two masses divided by the square of the distance between them.” He would be correct. But ask any scientist, or any person, why matter attracts other matter, and he will have to admit he does not know. He would be right because no one on earth knows. This is one of the many things “Hidden in the counsels of God.”
Albert Einstein spent thirty years trying to figure out gravity to no avail. Since his death, teams of physicists have made the same effort to explain gravity. Again, to no avail. The great Apostle Paul realized that God did not see fit for man to understand everything. He says, “For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known” (1 Corinthians 13:12). We only know in part, even as believers, while on earth. Some day we may be able to ask God why gravity exists and how it works.
I was privileged to teach physics and most other natural sciences in high school and college for forty years. And I finally concluded something that I often shared with my students. And that is, “The more science I learn, the more God I see.” If we are at all wise, we have to agree with Dr. Peck about the mysterious nature of the universe. I have also come to realize that of all the things I have learned, the most important fact is that Jesus saves. He saves all who believe in and trust their souls to Him.
To me, nothing we can ever do on earth is as critically important as taking care of the destiny of our souls. And that means trusting Christ for His salvation. I also preach that a decision for Christ alone makes it possible to see heaven. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” There is no other way. However, be warned, this life on earth is the only opportunity. Once a person dies, he then has no chance at all to ever see heaven. And the scary thing is that no one knows when he will die and lose his opportunity to be saved. As I often preach, “You don’t have to be old to die.”
For example, last year a member of our church lost a grandson of 21. He died in a motorcycle accident. When that young man got up that morning, he never expected to die. Like all young people, he fully expected to see middle and then old age. Fortunately, this young man was a Christian, so we know he is in heaven. But I grieve to think how many young people are living so very dangerously by postponing making a decision to trust Christ.
