Commentary

In church this past Sunday, a couple of lines from a song we sang have just stuck with me. It said, "When I think of all You've done, when I think of all You've brought me through. When I think about your love, I could never say enough thank yous."

Commentary: Conscience and the Holy Spirit

God has programmed into every individual His moral code. It takes the form of conscience. And it is very wise to listen to it. But many people do not.

I do not like driving at night.  I will admit I am not a great driver at night.  It just seems like it gets harder and harder to see well in the dark.  Last Friday night, Wayne was driving me and one of our granddaughters home after visiting with our other grandchildren in Buford.  It was around 10:00.

Pastor's wife: Holiday choices

I cried in Hobby Lobby this week. Because I missed my mom. Walking down the Thanksgiving then Christmas aisles, I was overwhelmed with a sense of yearning for my sweet mother, who is now in heaven. The wrapping paper had me longing for her presence.

Commentary: Abide with us

The fourth verse of the song, "O Little Town of Bethlehem," says, “O holy Child of Bethlehem, descend on us, we pray; cast out our sin, and enter in, be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell; o come to us, abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel!” This prayer should be the desire of every Christian.

Pastor's wife: Those courageous pilgrims

The ship was packed with all their earthly possessions. The sails were ready to unfurl, catching the wind of adventure. The prayers had been prayed, decisions made. This would be the most …

Pastor's wife: A very scary story

There were lots of scary things to see on Halloween. Vampires, Ghostface, scary clowns, Michael Myers, and zombies walked the streets as kids raced house to house for sugary stuff sure to cause cavities.

Have you ever thought about the phrase "by the way?" I think it is an often-used phrase, so I decided to do some research on it. I looked up the term, and one of the earliest meanings of it is “while going along, in the course of one’s walk or journey.”

Commentary: Six facts about giving thanks

A cartoon showed a turkey and a fortune teller hovering over the crystal ball. The fortune teller said, “I see you surrounded by family... well, not your family!”

Commentary: Called to be saints

If you are a believer in Jesus Christ, you are by definition a saint. And though I would never call or even think of myself as a saint, I acknowledge the truth of the Apostle Paul’s statement to the Roman believers.

Pastor's wife: Learning from other gens

Jaselle has been giving me tips on lipstick. I don’t ever seem to find the right shade, while hers is always spot on. (She can wear deep red like nobody’s business.) We recently talked about my struggle. I confessed that I have a hard time staying in the lines; she does not.

Thursday thoughts: The warmth of a hug

Wayne and I attended our old church this past Sunday. There was a special worship service that we wanted to be a part of. Before we moved to Jefferson, we had been active members of this church for over 20 years. Our children accepted Christ there, were baptized there, and we have wonderful friendships there.

Pastor's wife: Looking back on 45 years

Way back in the 1900s (the 70s, that is), a TV show called Fantasy Island was popular. In one hour, each week, a handful of men and women traveled to a tropical isle where Mr. Roarke and Tattoo awaited to make their secret dreams come true.

I will have to admit that I am not a cold weather fan. I love the warmth of summer, and I cannot stand to be cold. Figuring out his time of year is hard because it is cold in the morning and then warm in the afternoon. The weather actually changes during the day.

Commentary: Humility and the old man

Long life has taught me to value humility. It has also made me desire to desire humility in myself. God has taught me through His Word and other sources that I truly am not good. I am infested with selfishness and lack of concern and love for other people at times.

Pastor's wife: Both feet in

Luke 5 tells of a day that changed everything for Simon Peter. He had worked as a fisherman for years. One long night of not catching fish was setting him up for a change.

I was in a meeting this week, and the pastor who gave the devotion was talking about "guarding your heart." I have thought about that quite often since I heard the devotion

Commentary: Jesus and the mountains

Recently, my wife, daughter, and I hiked portions of Black Rock Mountain state park in Mountain City, Georgia, located in Rabun County. Named for its various cliffs of dark-colored rock, this place is the highest state park in Georgia with an altitude of 3,640 feet.

Walking in God’s Spirit requires a relationship with the Holy Spirit. It means to be led by the Spirit. All believers are indwelt by the Holy Spirit, but not all believers follow Him.

Pastor's wife: Buoying the spirit

The Bible study time was great, and the Dunkin' Donuts coffee had been oh, so good. It was a wonderful start for the day. Later in the morning, I realized I felt lighthearted; my spirit was buoyed. I had a feeling of joy that lingered.

Thursday thoughts: 'My anchor holds!'

I heard a song on the way to work this morning, and it really spoke to my heart. Years ago, our church had a benefit concert to raise money for our family. Our daughter with special needs, Missie, had been granted a spot in a residential facility, but the funding from the State of Georgia would not be in place for two months. Needless to say, we did not have the money to pay for the two months, as residential mental health care is very expensive.

Commentary: It takes surrender

The late Dr. Charles Stanley said in his great little book, The Wonderful Spirit-filled Life, “The Spirit-filled life is a moment-by-moment relationship characterized by dependency on the Holy Spirit. And surrender is the foundation upon which that unique relationship is built and maintained.”

Pastor's wife: Fall in love with Jesus

We don’t know how it started. Maybe she made one wrong friend and that led her to another then another. Perhaps she dated one wrong guy in school and that set her on the path of trouble. Somewhere something went terribly wrong. Before she knew it, she was in crisis.

Thursday thoughts: The glorious unknown

I love music. I listen to a Christian music station all the time. The station I listen to at certain times during the day will play "older" Christian songs. Side note - when I say older, I mean like 25 years or so because this song was popular when my kids were teenagers and that was a long time ago!

Commentary: Lest I forget

Occasionally, a song, usually an old hymn, reverberates in my mind. I believe this is one of the ways God has of prompting me to do or write something to His glory. I delight in these things because they make me happy in serving the Lord Jesus.
